One person died and two other people are missing after a group of six was swept over a cascade in Oregon on Saturday, officials said.
The group has passed over Dillon Falls on the Deschutes river west of Bend just before 3 p.m., that is to say when the call of 911 arrived, the Sheriff’s office of the County of Deschutes said on facebook.
A person has been declared dead on the scene, and a multi-aging research and rescue mission is underway to find the two missing, according to the sheriff’s office.
The office did not immediately identify the deceased.
Three people were saved from water and taken by ambulance at the medical center of the St. Charles health system in Bend, the sheriff’s office said. Their conditions are not known.
Dillon Falls, in the center of Oregon, is around 173 miles southeast of Portland. The falls have a drop of 15 feet which turns into rapids when the water reaches the Deschutes river, According to Central Oregon Visitwhich promotes tourism in the region.
Photos published By the sheriff’s office show a danger panel warning visitors to the nearby waterfall and indicating that the paddles should wear life vests.
The office, as well as its search and rescue arm and Bend Fire and Rescue, replied on Saturday. Bend police provided drones to help research.
The Sheriff’s Office said that its research and rescue team had launched two drones in the Dillon Falls region on Sunday. Fifteen members of a quick water rescue team searched areas highlighted by drones, said the sheriff’s office.
Three K-9 teams also joined the research effort and worked with marine patrol boats to travel the area downstream of the falls, added the sheriff’s office.
No updates were available by Sunday evening. The sheriff’s office said that the crews will resume their efforts on Monday morning.
