The Sheriff Bob Norris said he received aid from the federal and local agencies.
FBI spokesperson Sandra Barker said the office had agents assigned to the situation. “I can confirm that we help,” she said by e-mail.
At least one US Marshal Service agent was also observed on the scene, wearing a long pistol.
The police took fire to Canfield Mountain this afternoon, hoping that an opening removes the shooter or the shooters, said the Sheriff of the County of Kootenai, Bob Norris.
“This is a very, very fresh situation,” he said. “We actively take elite shooters when we speak.”
He said that anyone used “high power” firearms, and he indicated that there was no easy solution for the police. In addition, he said, it is not clear if they are faced with a shooter or more.
“I hope someone has a clear blow and is able to neutralize the threat,” said Norris at a press conference.
Norris said civilians were still coming out of the mountains while officials are trying to erase it.
Sheriff officers take on a shot from active elite shooters, said Norris. The shots come from several locations. No officer was touched.
He said the situation is both active and “very, very fresh”.
Officials are “ready to neutralize the suspect who is currently doing actively,” said Norris.
A shooter killed two people in the north of Idaho this afternoon while the fire staff responded to a fire that broke out on Canfield Mountain, the authorities said.
Officials received initial appeals on fire at 1:21 p.m., said Kootenai County sheriff, Bob Norris. At 2 p.m. it was reported that these firefighters were killed.
Norris said he thought the two people killed were firefighters. The number of injuries is unknown.
Canfield Mountain is in Alene, which is in northwest Idaho, about 30 miles from Spokane, Washington.
