Investigators say that a truck carrying a mother and three young children was confused with another vehicle during the shooting while the vehicles left the stadium. Shots killed Froylan Villegas, 11 years old and paralyzed the cousin Tatiana Villegas, while Foylan’s mother and little brother were unharmed.
In February, a jury condemned Jose Romero and Nathen Garley, both at the beginning of the twenty, of first degree murder, falsification of evidence, shooting on or from a vehicle and other accusations in the death of Villegas.
The men were sentenced to life prison for more than 46 years, ensuring that they will remain in the care of the correctional services permanently, the prosecutors said.
In the aftermath of the shooting and others who killed children, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a public health emergency on armed violence, temporarily suspended the right to transport firearms in certain parks and playgrounds in the Grand Albuquerque region. The decision addressed the demonstrations and legal challenges by defenders of firearms.
District prosecutor Sam Bregman, a democratic candidate for the post of governor in 2026, said in a statement that the shots “rocked our whole community” and welcomed his staff for having continued responsibility.
