Trump signs an executive decree extending the deadline for the sale or divestment of Tiktok from the Chinese parent company bytedance on September 17.
The American president, Donald Trump, signed an executive decree extending the deadline of Bytedance, based in China, to sell his American assets of the abbreviated video application Tiktok by 90 other dayshe said, despite a law that forced a sale or a closure.
“I have just signed the executive decree extending the deadline for the closure of Tiktok for 90 days (September 17, 2025),” said the president in an article Thursday on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The ban would have otherwise started on Thursday.
“We are grateful to the leadership and support of President Trump to guarantee that Tiktok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users and 7.5 million American companies that count on the platform while we continue to work with the vice-president (JD) office (JD),” said Tiktok in a press release.
The Vance office was involved in negotiations with the platform.
Adopted in April 2024 and known as the Acts on Applications Controlled by Foreign Adversaries, the law obliged Tiktok to stop operating in the United States by January 19, unless Bydance has ended to disintegrate the American assets of the application or to demonstrate significant progress towards a sale.
The law was challenged at the Supreme Court in January, but the highest jurisdiction of the nation confirmed the ban.
This is the third time that the president has extended the deadline. Trump began his second term as president on January 20 and chose not to enforce the law. He first extended the deadline in early April, then again last month to June 19.
The Democratic senators argued that Trump had no legal power to extend the deadline and suggested that an agreement considered would not meet the legal requirements.
The White House said on Tuesday that the application will be “compulsory for a sale or a closure in the absence of significant progress”.
“President Trump does not want Tiktok to become dark,” the journalists of the White House, Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday.
She added that the administration will spend the next three months to ensure that the sale ends so that Americans can continue to use Tiktok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.
In March, Trump said that he would be willing to reduce prices on China to conclude an agreement with Bytedance to sell the application.
An agreement had been in progress this spring which would turn Tiktok American operations in a new company based in the United States belonging to the majority and operated by American investors. This was suspended after China said it would not approve of this agreement due to the prices imposed by the Trump administration.
Tiktok has a large base of American users, especially among young audiences. According to a Pew Research survey carried out in December, a third of all American adults use Tiktok, and among the under 30s, it is 59% higher while 67% of adolescents use the platform.
