Leeds’ head coach Brad Arthur was strongly critical of his team’s attitude and qualified his first half performance “embarrassing” as a defeat of 18-4 against St Helens.

Wilkin: Leeds approached the game with arrogance

Sky Sports Rugby League Jon Wilkin was also not impressed by the approach of Leeds’s rhinos in the competition and thinks they arrived with “arrogance” after winning their last five games.

“I thought it was an arrogant and too confident performance of Leeds,” he said.

“I thought they had approached the game with the arrogance of the first minute, not respecting possession of the saints which offer too easily.

“Brad Arthur will flee this. This is the whole attitude.

It was another story to win the head coach Paul Welens, who believes that his team found the “plan” to obtain the big victories like this one who escaped them.

“It was a really important match for us,” said head coach Wekens. “I thought the way the team approached him was first class. We got out of the back of a short recovery in Salford, and it was a physical game.

“We did almost nothing on the training field, but the players started to go there and happen like that against a very good team. To keep them at only four points on a night like this, I think, was a huge defensive effort.

“The challenge for us now is to rely on this and build a certain consistency. It has been one of our problems lately. It is a plan for us in the way of playing in big games.”

“(The tackle of Harry Robertson) was the night game for me,” added Welens. “I was confident to come this evening that we would get a good solid performance and, when I saw this, it reassured me even more than we are here to play.”
