The Austrian Grand Prix of this weekend marks the last event when the world champion of the F1 Max Verstappen produces a rope rope.
The controversial collision of Verstappen with George Russell earlier this month at the Spanish Grand Prix flinchbered his title hopes, but the biggest bite in the tail was the three penalty points he added to his super F1 license.
The importance of this additional sanction was that it moved Verstappen over 11 points for the 12 -month period – a distant from the triggering of an automatic ban on a race under F1 regulations.
The points remain on a driving license for a year until they expire. Verstappen does not drop the first of its current points before June 30 – Monday after the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend.

Verstappen passed without penalty during the first eight races of this season in Spain – and even longer sequences in the past – so Red Bull will certainly support its quadruple champion to find the right balance again. But there is certainly not much room for even slight errors in judgment in the wheel fight in Spielberg, given the way in which the penalty points have accumulated for Verstappen in a little less than a year.
Explain the F1 penalty points system
F1 introduced the penalty point system for violations of drivers’ track rules from the start of the 2014 season, designed to act as an additional means of deterrent against regular incidents on the right track.
Although sports sanctions – such as temporal penalties, grid penalties, drive -throughs and, in the most extreme cases, disqualifications – are among the options available for the commissioners of the Grand Prix to punish those who also have the possibility of applying penalty points – one, two or three – for a super driver’s license.
A super license is a compulsory requirement for all drivers to appear in the Grand Prix weekends and this is what penalty points are applied.
In this regard, it is similar to the process of totalization on standard driving licenses for traffic offenses. As on the road, drivers are prohibited if they reach the maximum of 12 points – which, in the case of F1, covers a period of 12 months.
The sports regulations indicate: “If a driver accumulates twelve (12) penalty points, his license will be suspended for the following competition, following which twelve (12) points will be withdrawn from the license.
“The penalty points will remain on a great driver’s license for a period of twelve (12) months, after which they will be deleted respectively during the twelve (12) months of their taxation.”
How did Verstappen collected his 11 points?
- June 30, 2024 – 2 points – causing a collision with Lando Norris in Austrian GP
- October 27, 2024 – 2 points – Forcing Lando Norris off the track at Mexico GP
- November 2, 2024 – 1 point – Driving too quickly under a virtual safety car in Sao Paulo Sprint
- November 30, 2024 – 1 point – driving slowly useless and hampering George Russell in Qatar GP qualifying
- December 8, 2024 – 2 points – causing a collision with Oscar Piastri in the GP of Abu Dhabi
- June 1, 2025 – 3 points – causing a collision with George Russell in the Spanish GP
The first two points of Verstappen of his Austrian collision with Norris expired on the anniversary of a year of the incident on June 30, but the next two after that of Mexico last year are not his count before the end of October.
This means that Verstappen, even if it avoids the trigger points for the prohibition in Austria, will remain on nine points for another price of nine grand-grand.
What type of incident can trigger a single penalty point?
Race commissioners can issue three penalty points for the most serious offenses, one for lower incidents.
On Thursday, the FIA made public for the first time two documents that the commissioners use as directives for the conduct of standards and penalties. Although documents have no regulatory value and the commissioners make their decisions regardless of the FIA on the basis of applicable regulations, directives recommend penalties appropriate for some 100 common offenses.
As detailed above, Verstappen has twice collected unique penalty points for incidents in the past year – the first to run too quickly under the virtual safety car in the Sao Paulo Sprint, the second to Qatar for having unnecessarily driven in front of a Russell coming in the opposite direction.

Russell, by coincidence, picked up the current unique point on his own license in the same weekend of Qatar by not joining the rule which forces a driver to keep a distance of 10 cars behind the safety car.
Collisions with other cars have also earned drivers a penalty point in the recent past (Liam Lawson in Bahrain and Miami) – and not only in the races.
Lance Stroll of Aston Martin had only one point added to his super license during Monaco GP from last month to collide with Ferrari by Charles Leclerc during Friday training.

Esteban Ocon, meanwhile, received a penalty point in Miami last year for a dangerous release of the standard track when he left the Alpin garage and entered the side of Leclerc before his towers towards the sprint grid.
Has anyone ever reached the 12-point limit?

Such a reshuffle, however, would in turn create a unique vacancy in the junior outfit to be filled.
