Lando Norris exceeded the Oscar Piastri teammate while McLaren sealed a two dominant on the second try at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Although he passed the opening session earlier Friday while McLaren filled one of their obligatory recruit sessions by directing the Irish teenager Alex Dunne, Norris was quickly on the rhythm of the Red Bull ring, fixing for a time of 1: 04.580 to improve Piastri by 0.157.
The display represented an impressive return to the action for Norris after provoking a collision with the leader of the World Championship Piastri the last time in Canada who led him to withdraw from the race and saw his deficit to his teammate go to 22 points.
McLaren, who brought an improved front suspension to Spielberg, seems to have an advantage on the rest of the field, with Max Verstappen three tenths in two in third place despite the Red Bull having brought a revised ground advantage to their event at home.
Norris said: “The car felt good on the part. Alex gave good comments this morning after FP1 and he was immediately at the pace, so it was good to see.
“I think they moved the car in the right direction for FP2, and we just need to understand if we want more (Saturday), or a little less, or somewhere in the middle. So many good steps in the right direction, but still a little more to come.
“We have shown a little more rhythm than some of the others. I certainly think they will catch up. Max is not far behind and they generally improve a lot of Saturday.”
George Russell, fresh out of his first victory of the season in Canada, seemed to be the most likely challenger of McLaren after dominating the first training for Mercedes, but had to be satisfied with the sixth of the second session.
Russell made his qualifying simulations of the gentle type earlier than the McLarens on the area quickly improving, which could explain part of the difference of six tenths between him and Norris.
Russell said: “The first training was certainly a surprise for us. Second training, we certainly did not have the pace as we did this morning in Qualy races. And the pace of the race was a worse step, we must therefore analyze where it was.
“The McLarens were very strong, especially this afternoon. I don’t really see it changing. We will do our best, but I don’t really think we will fight for the post.”
Lance Stroll took a fourth surprise for Aston Martin in front of Charles Leclerc de Ferrari, the new soil of the Italian team seeming to have brought little improvement.
Lewis Hamilton was even worse when he finished 10th while complaining about a lack of rhythm in his Ferrari.
The seven times world champion has been faced with a post-session investigation for hampering Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes, but escaped a serious sentence when he received a warning.
Hamilton said: “Charles was six tenths, I was close to a second, so not ideal. But I think there is a lot of learning, so I think we will bring changes and hope that we can try to get closer. But we will not be forward.
“A huge amount of work continued to speak, but, as you can see, that has not necessarily changed our competitiveness. The car does not feel bad, it’s just that we are a huge piece in terms of rhythm. We have to examine this.”
There have been encouragement for the defeat world champion Verstappen, who is 43 Piastri points in third in the pilots, because he seemed at least capable of corresponding to the long -term pace of McLaren.
In practice, the 19 -year -old Irish pilot, Dunne announced himself to the paddock by going fourth faster, finishing in a tenth of teammate for the Piastri session.
The head of the F2 championship has little prospects for progression to a seat with McLaren of soon, but has offered a projection which will catapult his name in all possible openings elsewhere for the 2026 season.
