A truck collided with a minibus carrying day workers, including two 14 -year -old girls, at their workplace.
A truck collided with a minibus carrying workers on a road to Egypt, killing 19 people, most of them, according to local officials.
The collision occurred while workers were heading for work in the early hours of Friday morning on a regional road in the city of Ashmoun in the province of Delta du Nile, Menoufia, north of the capital of Cairo.
The truck collided with the minibus while it was carrying the workers at their workplace from their native village of Kafr al-Sanabsa, according to the state belonging to the State, Akhbar al-Youm.
Most workers were adolescents – only two of them – according to a list of names and ages published by the Daily Public State, Al -Ahram. The Egyptian media nicknamed the victims of the “martyrs for their daily bread” accident.
Some 1.3 million minors are engaged in a certain form of children’s work in Egypt, according to government figures, and accidents often involve minor workers traveling to work in overcrowded minibuses in rural areas.
On Friday, only three people survived the accident, according to a statement from the Egyptian Labor Ministry, and were transferred to Ashmoun General Hospital.
Egyptian Labor Minister Mohamed Gebran ordered the authorities to compensate for the families of the deceased with up to 200,000 Egyptian pounds (around $ 4,000) each. Each injured person will also receive 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($ 400).
The provincial governor of Menoufia, Ibrahim Abu Leimon, said that the cause of the accident would be studied. Preliminary reports suggest that excessive speed may have been a key factor.
Abu Leimon also called the country’s Ministry of Transport to reassess security measures on the regional road. In April, five members of a single family died in a collision in two cars on the same road.
Mortal traffic accidents make thousands of lives each year across Egypt.
In October 2023, 35 people were killed, at least 18 of which burned to death, in a “horrible collision” involving a bus and several cars on the road to the Cairo-Alexandria desert, according to Al-Ahram.
