Nearly 500 flights were canceled from Atlanta airport due to bad weather



Nearly 500 flights traveling in and outside the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta international airport were canceled due to the violent weather with an impact on the Atlanta metropolitan region.

Friday evening, a group of long -term storms produced torrential precipitation in a large part of the Atlanta region, according to the National Weather Service Field Office in the city.

Strong precipitation resulted in significant floods in the area surrounding the airport, as well as Grant Park, College Park and Forest Park.

A video published on social networks has shown that travelers were stuck at the airport in the midst of delays and cancellations sitting on the ground while other travelers were sleeping. Another video on X represented lightning lights illuminating the sky in Hampton, a suburb south of Atlanta.

The thunderstorms were to continue in the region this weekend, especially in the afternoon and in the evening, according to the weather service office in Atlanta.

Saturday at 3 p.m., 468 flights traveling outside of Atlanta airport were canceled and 540 were delayed, according to Flightaware.com. Many flights are operated by Delta Air Lines, whose head office has its headquarters at city airport.

“The people of Delta also work safely and quickly as possible to recover the flights affected by thunderstorms, lightning, hail and the winds of our Atlanta center on Friday evening,” the airline said in a statement. “We thank our clients for their continuous patience and understanding.”

Intense thunderstorms that have had an impact on the airport, including with strong winds and a quarter of a quarter of a quarter, resulted in more than 90 diversions to other southeast airports, according to the airline. The violent time has also caused a break in Atlanta airport operations for security reasons on Friday evening.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

Delta also said that he expects additional delays and cancellations on Saturday while teams are working to reset aircraft and crew members rest. The airline has more than 900 flights scheduled per day from Atlanta airport.
