The Spanish ball holder, Aitana Bonmati, is hospitalized for meningitis two weeks before the Euro 2025 championships.
The Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati, the double golden ball, was hospitalized with viral meningitis less than a week before the start of the European Women’s European football championship.
Spanish coach Montse Tome said late Friday that her star player had felt bad and was taken to Madrid hospital where she had been tested positive for meningitis.
The Spanish team is expected to go to Switzerland on Sunday for the tournament. His first match was against Portugal Thursday in Bern. He will also face Belgium and Italy in group B at Euro 2025.
“Aitana is a very important player for us and we will wait for it,” said volume after Bonmati missed Friday’s friendly match against Japan in the Spanish capital when Spain beat visitors 3-1.
Tome said Bonmati started feeling bad with a fever during training early on Friday.
“She authorized me to say that she suffers from viral meningitis,” said volume. “The word is scary, but the doctor tells me that she is under control. She will stay in the hospital and we don’t know how long.”
Bonmati, 27, has won the individual women’s prize in the past two years. The Barcelona player was the key to Spain by winning the 2023 women’s world cup.
Bonmati’s vision, dribbling skills, passes and goals were also vital for Barcelona to reach five consecutive finals in the Champions League, the Catalan club winning three titles.
His absence would exert more pressure on Alexia Potellas, herself a double winner of Ballon d’Or, and his compatriot of the midfielder of Barcelona, Patricia Guijarro, to direct Spain. Against Japan, Tome launched Vicky Lopez, 18, in place of Bonmati.
Three years ago, Putellas torn his ACL three days before starting the European Championship 2022. Spain was eliminated in the quarterfinals without its player then high.
Spain should always be favored in her first game against Portugal, a team she beat twice in April – including a 7-1 home victory – in the League of Nations.
