Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati was released from the hospital after being treated for viral meningitis a few days before the start of Euro 2025.
With the tournament that should start on Wednesday, the 27 -year -old Barcelona player will join her national team’s training camp in the coming days.
The world champions Spain are starting their campaign on Thursday with a group B match against Portugal in Bern.
Bonmati, who won the Ballon d’Or for two years, was absent for the 3-1 friendly victory of his country against Japan on Friday.
She posted a photo on Instagram by herself watching the match, which was played in the Spanish city of Leganes, from a hospital bed.
A statement from the Spanish Football Federation reads as follows: “After several days in the hospital with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmati was released from the hospital and will join the training camp of the Spanish national team in the coming days.”
Bonmati was a key member of the Spanish team who won the 2023 World Cup – after the victory over England in the final – and the 2024 Nations League.
Speaking after the friendly match against Japan, the Spanish head coach Montse Tome, whose team also faces Belgium and Italy in the group phase of Euro 2025, said: “She is an extremely important player for us and we will expect it, no matter what, as long as we owe.”
