The legendary American coach D. Wayne Lukas died at the age of 89.
It was announced on Monday that he had been forced to retire due to serious health problems and that he was to leave the hospital to spend his last days with his family at his home in Louisville, Kentucky.
Lukas died on Saturday evening and a family declaration on www.churchilldows.com read: “It is with Heavy Hearts that we announce the death of the legendary coach of the renowned temple D. Wayne Lukas.
“Wayne has devoted her life to thoroughbred races – not only thanks to her unrivaled success on the track, but through his impact on the people who are there. He shaped generations of horsemen and horses, and helped develop sport with his passion, vision and leadership.
“Whether he praises a promising two -year -old child or quietly offered advice before a big race, Wayne brought the heart, grace and grain to each part of the game.
“Right now, we are wondering to join us in a moment of silence to honor the memory of D. Wayne Lukas.”
Lukas, who was inducted into the fame of fame in 1999, won the Kentucky Derby four times among his 15 Triple Crown racing wins and won 20 victories at Breeders’ Cup, a record equaled only by Aidan O’Brien.
It had already been announced that the long -standing assistant, the Englishman Sebastian “Bas” Nicholl will take over from his stable.
