Lando Norris’s seventh GP victory reduces the advance of the Oscar Piastri championship from 22 to 15 points after 11 laps.
Lando Norris has held a challenge from the entire race of his teammate McLaren Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix and raise his hopes for formula 1.
Norris and Piastri fought for the head in the first stadiums of the race on Sunday with the Australian briefly in the lead before Norris resumed the position. A reckless Piastri slit almost caused a collision shortly after.
Piastri has lost ground at the stands of the stands and was largely sunk on the grass by Franco Colapinto d’Alpine while cutting traffic. He quickly invented the ground on Norris but was not close enough to try to overtake.
On the radio, Norris described it as a “beautiful finish” for the team.
“We had a great battle, that’s for sure,” he added later. “Lots of stress but a lot of fun. A great battle, so well done in Oscar.”
More than ever this season, the reigning fight focuses on the two McLarens after the title champion Max Verstappen was hit by Kimi Antonelli in the first round, ending his race. Antonelli then received a three -seater grid penalty for the next race.
The global leader, Piastri, leads Norris, second row by 15 points with Verstappen still third, but now 61 in advance.
Piastri apologized to McLaren for the quasi-collision between the two, who came a race after Norris collided with him in Canada. The Australian said he regretted not having done more of his few seconds in the lead in the race.
“I hope it was a good observation because it was a fairly difficult work of the car,” said Pitri. “I tried my best absolute and I could probably have done a better job when I took ahead momentarily. It was a good battle, a little at the limit sometimes. ”
Charles Leclerc finished third for his third podium in four races, and his teammate Ferrari Lewis Hamilton finished fourth.
George Russell, who won the latest race in Canada, finished fifth for Mercedes and Liam Lawson Sixth for Racing Bulls in his best result of the season.
Fernando Alonso from Aston Martin retained Gabriel Bortoleto de Sauber for the seventh. Nico Hulkenberg’s second sauber was ninth, and Esteban Ocon finished 10th for Haas.
McLaren is 207 points from Ferrari – which went back to the second row in the absence of the boss of the Fred Vasseur team, who had to go home for personal reasons – in the manufacturers’ championship.
The second round of the F1 World Championship will take place next weekend at the British Grand Prix.
