Oscar Piastri apologized to McLaren after admitting to having “pushed back the limits” in the incident that almost saw him collided with teammate Lando Norris in their battle for the Austrian victory of the Grand Prix.
Just about fifteen after the two McLarens contacted Norris’s bad judgment when he was hit on the back of his teammate’s car, Piastri came to a few hundreds after doing the same in turn 20 when he went to move inside the four turn but locked his front tires.
The two cars just avoided the contact while Norris turned around, the Briton continuing to keep his head and win the race ahead of Piastri to reduce the world title of his teammate to 15 points.
Shortly after his first stop at the stand, Piastri was warned by his racing engineer Tom Stallard: “The comments of the wall of the pit, the fourth round maneuver with the locking was too marginal. We cannot start again.”
After the race, a piastri apologetic recognized McLaren Team Radio: “Sorry for the Tour four move. My bad.”
Developing later later, the Australian said about McLaren’s instruction: “I mean, I thought it was a just comment.
“Log and miss the back of your teammate by not much push the limits.
“Even if I hadn’t said anything, I didn’t think it was a wise decision to try again. So, yes, a just comment and nothing more than that.“”
The boss of the Andrea Stella team said Sky Sports F1: “We had to give Oscar a little advice in terms of maneuver in the corner four, which he really recognized.
“I am proud of him for the way he said immediately after the checkered flag that he was sorry for this maneuver, he went a little too far.
“It’s not easy. It’s Formula 1, it flows hard, but it’s a good day.”
The dominant pair McLaren had already gone Rouer for wheel for several corners nine laps earlier, Piastri briefly winning the advance in only three so that Norris takes up the position before the next corner.
And with the teammates who finally fought without contact, Stella said that the team was “very happy, very proud of the way they managed the situation” on the track.
He added: “These are obviously stressful moments, but we have confidence, we count on Oscar and Lando. And also, once we are on the pit wall, you just try to stay as refrigerated as possible, analyze what is going on.
“But for us, it was clear that the guys must both have the opportunity to win the race, as long as they do it in the way they did it today.
“It is therefore a big show for Formula 1. We are happy to entertain our fans and we look forward to more races like this, even if, yes, it can give us a certain nervousness on the wall of the pit. But that is why we are here.”
Piastri added: “There have been a few battles in the past, not just last week, but last year and the previous year. So, I think we both knew what to expect.
“It was a difficult battle. It was close at times, probably pushing the limits a little on my side once or twice. But we are fighting for racing victories in Formula 1.
“It will be a fairly difficult and hard work. I thought it was an entertaining race. After the first stop, maybe we did not do the right thing by giving Lando a certain breathing room, but the first 20 laps were quite intense. So it was a good battle.”
