Host Nation Maroc will face Nigeria during the Women’s African Cup of Nations after defeating Ghana in penalties.
Goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi blocked Yeboah’s comfort, and the hosts, Morocco, qualified for the Nations Cup championship in Women Africa (Wafcon) during a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw with Ghana.
Morocco, which prevailed 4-2 on Tuesday, will face Nigeria in the final on Saturday. The Super Falcons beat the reigning champions in South Africa 2-1 in the previous semi-final Tuesday in Casablanca.
Ghana took a lead in the first half. Er-Rmichi brought a hand on Josephine Bonsu’s head, but he bounced on the post and crossed Stella Nyamekye’s goal to push him into the net in the 26th minute.
Morocco equalized the 55th when Sakina Ouzraoui rebounded a pass from her chest to her feet and scored under the diving of the goalkeeper of Ghana Cynthia Konlan.
Without a goal for the rest of the regulation, the match went more time at the Rabat Olympic stadium.
Morocco has seen its national team increase in recent years. The team reached the Wafcon final in 2022 but fell into South Africa. Morocco also went to the Women’s World Cup for the first time in 2023 and qualified for the final of 16.
Morocco has advanced in the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory against Mali, while Ghana killed Algeria 4-2 with penalties after a goalless draw.
Michelle Alozie’s long ball has rebounded in order to give Nigeria a 2-1 victory over South Africa earlier on Tuesday, and send the Super Falcons to the Wafcon final.
The Super Falcons won nine Wafcon titles. Disappointed by their fourth place in the 2022 tournament, the Super Falcons have nicknamed their objective of winning this event as “Mission X”.
Alozie, who plays in the National Women’s Soccer League for the Houston Dash, sent the ball at a distance four minutes in the stop time. Although two teammates were in front of the net of South Africa, none of them touched the ball as it bounced from the goal.
Rasheedat Ajibade, who plays for Atlético Madrid, converted a penalty just before half-time to put Nigeria forward 1-0. The Super Falcons received the penalty due to handball in the box.
South Africa, the title champions of the Wafcon, even withdrew Linda Motlhalo’s penalty in the 60th minute.
The Nigeria, who had not previously conceded a goal in the tournament, unrolled Zambia 5-0 in the quarterfinals to move forward. South Africa, led by coach Desiree Ellis, has advanced penalties after a goalless draw with Senegal.
There was a scary moment in the 84th minute when the midfielder in South Africa Gabriela Salgado injured himself, and the players of the two teams frantically gesture.
Salgado was stretched with his heavily wrapped left leg while his teammates sobbed. The Larbi Zaouli stadium crowd has chanted its name.
