WhatsApp adds new features to protect against scams

WhatsApp presents new features to help people identify scams on the messaging service, the company announced on Tuesday. The company has also said that it has eliminated more than 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts linked to criminal scam centers targeting people worldwide.

The new features are designed to help detect scams in group and individual cats on the meta-ownership platform.

For group cats, WhatsApp launches an overview that will be displayed when someone who is not in your contact list adds you to a new group that you may not recognize. The security overview will include key group information, as well as advice to stay safe.

For example, you will see if the person who added you is one of your contacts and if a member of the group is one of your contacts.

If you decide that you could recognize the group, you can choose to see the cat for more context. Anyway, the cat notifications will be silent until you mark you want to stay in the group.

As for individual cats, WhatsApp notes that the crooks could try to start conversations with you elsewhere on the Internet before asking for a message on private messaging services like WhatsApp. To protect itself against this tactic, the application tests new ways to alert people before starting to talk to someone who could try to scam them.

For example, it works to warn users when they start a conversation with someone who is not in their contacts by showing them an additional context on whom they were.

WhatsApp also shared information on how it worked alongside Openai to disrupt the scam efforts that have been traced in a scam center in Cambodia.

“These attempts went from the supply of payments for false tastes to enlist others in a pyramid program to rent on a scooter, or to attract people to invest in cryptocurrency,” said WhatsApp in a Blog article.

“As Openai reported it, the crooks used Chatgpt to generate the initial text message containing a link to a WhatsApp chat, then quickly directed the target for telegram, where they were responsible for loving videos on Tiktok. The crooks tried to put confidence in their diagram by sharing the amount of task already”.

WhatsApp says that users can protect themselves from scams by taking time before answering to think about the question of whether the message can be read as a legitimate task. They should then wonder if the request is logical and if they precipitate you in the action. If they claim to be a friend or a family member, you must use another communication method to verify their identity.
