An experienced hiker who participates in distance racing, swimming and triathlons, Zann kan the word the word was almost killed by altitude evil By hiking with his father Ryan Wach on Mount Whitney from California in June 2025.

“He began to feel hallucinations,” Ryan told the Sfgate From 14 years old. “He knew he hallucinated. He said he had seen things like snowmen and Kermit the frog.”

Ryan managed to prevent his teenager from leaving the cliff several times as they go up on the path. “He was in an altered mental state, and I don’t know what caused him. We still don’t know,” noted the father. “My best supposition is a combination of exhaustion, sleep deprivation, probably dehydration and lasting effects of altitude evil. But it has essentially started to doubt reality.”

And during a third attempt, Ryan was too far to catch Zane, looking at his son falling around 120 feet from the cliff. After waiting six hours for a research and rescue helicopter from the county of Inyo to get there and fly Zane at the southern hospital in Inyo in Lone Pine, it was stabilized and transferred to a pediatric trauma center in Las Vegas.
