The appointment of the American president comes after the dismissal of the head of the agency raised concerns about the integrity of statistics from the United States government.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, pulled an economist from a conservative reflection group to lead a key statistical statistical agency after having drawn his previous head on his role in the publication of low-job figures.
Trump said on Monday that he had appointed Ej Antoni, the chief economist of the Heritage Foundation, to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
“Our economy is booming and EJ will guarantee that the figures released are honest and accurate. I know that EJ Antoni will do incredible work in this new role. Congratulations EJ! ” Trump wrote on his social platform for truth.
Trump’s appointment on Antoni, which requires confirmation from the US Senate, comes after his dismissal from Erika Mcentarfer earlier this month has raised concerns concerning the statistics of the American government remaining credible and exempt from political influence.
Trump justified Mcentarfer’s dismissal by saying, without evidence, that the last jobs report, which has shown highly slower job growth for May and June than previously, had been “rigged” to make it look bad.
At the Heritage Foundation, Antoni, who had called MCentarfer’s dismissal shortly before his dismissal, always showered Trump with praise.
After Trump’s announcement of a trade agreement with Japan last month, Antoni described the agreement as “damn close” to Perfect and the American president and his secretary to the Treasury, Scott Bessent, like “artistic masters”.
Last week, Antoni said in an article on social networks that there was “better ways to collect, process and disseminate” economic data, and that the next BLS chief should provide “precise data in time” to reconstruct confidence in the agency.
Antoni and the Heritage Foundation did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
Antoni’s appointment quickly aroused criticism of economists, who raised concerns about his qualifications and partisan trends.
Jason Furman, economist of the Harvard Kennedy School who was an advisor to former American president Barack Obama, described Antoni as “completely without reservation”.
“He is an extreme supporter and has no relevant expertise. He would be a break from the decades of non -partisan technocrats,” said Furman in an article on X.
Erica Groshen, who led BLS on Obama, expressed similar concerns.
“So far, what worries me is that the candidate and his work are not well known in commercial, university or public service communities,” said Groshen in Al Jazeera.
