Three people, including a child, were killed on Monday afternoon in a shooting outside a target store, and the suspect was arrested after flying a car and fleeing the premises in Austin, Texas, police announced.
The police responded to a shooting at 2:15 p.m. and police found three people who had been shot in the parking lot, said Lisa Davis, Austin police chief.
The shooting occurred outside the store, said the chef.
The suspect, identified as a 32 -year -old man, stole a car on the scene and fled, crashed this car, then stole another vehicle before his stop, said Davis.
“It’s a very sad day for Austin,” said Davis.
The victims were not identified on Monday by the authorities, but they were adults and declared dead on the scene, as well as another adult who was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead there, said the county of Austin-Travis EMS.
The suspect, who was not identified at a press conference, “has mental health history,” said the chief. He was arrested in South Austin by officers who used a paralyzing pistol, said Davis.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
One of the shooting victims would be the driver of the stolen vehicle at the target, said Davis.
The mayor of Austin, Kirk Watson, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
“It is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families. Although it remains an active and in progress investigation, what I would say is that it was an act of armed and cowardly violence”, he said on x.
“I am grateful for the rapid response of our APD officers and other first speakers and I want to thank them for their actions to apprehend the suspect,” he wrote.
