Investigators appoint higher figures among those responsible for alleged abuses in detention establishments.
The United Nations investigators say they have collected evidence of systematic torture in Myanmar detention facilities, identifying senior personalities among those responsible.
The independent investigation mechanism of Myanmar (IIMM), set up in 2018 to examine the potential violations of international law, said on Tuesday that prisoners had built blows, electric shocks, strangulation and elimination of the nails with pliers.
“We have discovered significant evidence, in particular testimonials from eye witnesses, showing systematic torture in myanmar detention facilities,” said Nicholas Koumjian, head of the mechanism, in a press release accompanying his 16 -page report.
The UN team said some prisoners died as a result of torture.
He also documented the abuse of children, often illegally detained as proxies for their missing parents.
According to the report, the United Nations team has made more than two dozen official information and access to the country, which all remained unanswered. Myanmar military authorities did not respond to requests for media comments.
The army has repeatedly denied having committed atrocities, saying that it maintains peace and security while blaming the “terrorists” for the troubles.
The results cover a year which ended on June 30 and is based on information of more than 1,300 sources, including hundreds of accounts of witnesses, a medico-legal analysis, photographs and documents.
The IAMM said that it has identified high -ranking commanders among the authors, but refused to appoint them to avoid alerting survey.
The report also revealed that government forces and armed opposition groups had committed summary executions. Officials from one of the two sides of the Myanmar conflict were not available to comment.
The latest Myanmar disorders began when a military coup in 2021 ousted an elected civil government, causing a national conflict. The UN estimates that tens of thousands of people have been held in efforts to crush dissent and strengthen the ranks of the military.
Last month, the head of military government, Min Aung Hlaing, ended a four -year emergency state and appointed acting president before the planned elections.
The mandate of the IIMM covers abuses in Myanmar dating from 2011, including the 2017 military campaign against the Rohingyas, mainly Muslim, who forced hundreds of thousands of ethnic minority members to flee from Bangladesh and post-group atrocities against several communities.
The IIMM also helps international legal proceedings, including business in Great Britain. However, the report warned that budget cuts at the UN could undermine its work.
“These financial pressures threaten the capacity of the mechanism to maintain its critical work and continue to support international and national justice efforts,” he said.
