China is about to launch SSDs so small that you insert them as a SIM card

The microSD cards are tiny but slow; The m.2 storage sticks on your PC are fast but larger and entirely closed. Now, a new type of SSD out of China could be the best of both worlds – and it is already ready to appear in two cutting -edge game laptops.

The Chinese storage manufacturer Biwin calls it the “mini SSD”, although another manufacturer calls it “1517”; It measures only 15 mm x 17 mm x 1.4 mm thick, smaller than an American penny and just slightly larger than the microSD. Despite this, it offers maximum sequential reading speeds of 3,700 megaoctes per second (or 3,400 MB / s written) on a 4×2 PCIe connection and offers capacities of 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TO.

The nano-sim used in recent smartphones are even smaller, however, and M.2 readers are even faster. I whipped a quick graphic so that you can easily compare various storage cards and Sims:

It is not clear if the Mini SSD of Biwin is a real standard that other storage manufacturers can easily adopt. The company claims resistance to water and dust IP68, which could be practical for phones in particular, and a resistance to the fall of three meters.
