The Bristol Bears confirmed the signing of Louis Rees-Zammit of “World Class”, which returns to Rugby Union for the new season after its passage in the NFL.
Rees-Zammit announced at the beginning of August that he would return to sport in which he had been capped 32 times by Wales, following a failed attempt to enter the NFL.
The 24-year-old participated in the international path of NFL players after leaving rugby in January 2024, then made pre-season appearances for the Kansas City chiefs before being recovered by the Jacksonville jaguars, but could not advance beyond the latter’s training team.
He returned to rugby with the prem rugby semi-finalists last season before the start of the 2025-26 campaign in September.
After Bristol announced his signature with a video on social networks with the slogan “There is a storm to come”, Rees-Zammit said: “Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me.
“The style of rugby played by the team – everything to entertain the fans and develop the game – align itself perfectly with the way I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field.
“I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall into love with the game. I am delighted to go back to rugby in a club that requires these values. I can’t wait to work with my teammates, Pat Lam and the coaches and the whole back-shop to bring success to the Bears.”
Bears rugby director Pat Lam said: “Louis is a world class player, and we are delighted to welcome him to Rugby Union and the Bears this season.
“Although we have a small team, we have built a quality depth and experience through the team, bringing players who can cover several positions to help us cross the next step in the first and Europe. Louis offers exactly this on our dynamic back three, with its capacity and its desire to play both the back and the full wing for the Bears.
“He has the dynamism and the ambition to be one of the best background players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club.
“At only 24 years old, we know the athlete and the competitor he is. The way we play and the way he wants to play in the form transparent together, and we look forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow (Friday).”
Bristol presents itself for the first time on the sales sharks at the pre-rugby rugby cup on Saturday September 13, while they open their home league campaign at the Leicester Tigers on Sunday, September 28.
The hopes of a rapid international return, on the other hand, were also stimulated by the head coach of New Wales Steve Tandy.
Talk to Sky Sports Last week before the autumn internationals from November, Tandy said: “I’m quite open -minded, I just want to see him play.
“It is the most important thing, to recover it and to be in an environment in which it is really happy.
“It is available is a massive addition to the team. You know it will be in a shiny fit, it will be in good shape and it is an instinctive rugby player who does things really naturally.
“The learning he had made of him a better rugby player, so it is, for him, to find the right club and the environment, and I have no doubt that he will come back where he was, if not better.”
