Texas health officials announced on Monday the official end of a devastating measles epidemic that reported 762 people and has been lifestyle to two young children.
The statement follows more than 42 consecutive days without a new affirmed case in the affected counties, respecting the public health threshold to declare a completed epidemic. The last case reported in Texas was July 1, according to state data.
Beyond the tragic deaths, the very contagious virus led to 100 hospitalizations. The cases were linked to epidemics in Canada and Mexico, subsequently spreading to other American states.
Texas Health Services Commissioner Jennifer Shuford noted the unusual nature of the epidemic, declaring that before his beginning, “most state physicians had not even seen a case of measles because of the way he became rare.” She attributed successful confinement to “tests, vaccination, follow -up and education”. Ms. Shuford also congratulated the efforts of health professionals, declaring: “I want to highlight the tireless work of public health professionals through the state that contributed to the containment of one of the most contagious viruses.”
Measles, a highly contagious virus, causes skin and respiratory symptoms, potentially leading to serious complications or death. It is prevented by measles, mumps and the rubbing vaccine, recommended for young children before school. State representatives will continue to monitor new cases.
