There must be a push for peace to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, but the French president Emmanuel Macron is skeptical that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to resolve the conflict.
“When I look at the situation and the facts, I do not see President Putin very willing to get peace now,” Macron told NBC News, the press moderator “Kristen Welker in an exclusive interview on Monday after a Monday issues of the White House meeting. “But maybe I’m too pessimistic.”
He also said: “The optimism of your president must be taken seriously. So, if he considers that he can conclude an agreement, this is excellent news, and we must do everything we can have a lot. ”
Macron insisted that the United States had to put pressure on Russia and Putin to find a resolution, in particular by introducing more sanctions.
If there is no progress in the bilateral meeting that President Donald Trump announced between Putin and the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy and if a trilateral meeting falls, “or if the Russians do not comply with this approach, yes, we must increase sanctions, secondary and primary sanctions,” said Macron.
“There is an attacker, who is Russia. There is a country that has decided to kill people, stole children and who refused a ceasefire and peace, so we cannot simply create an equivalent situation between Ukraine and Russia. ”
Ukraine must receive security guarantees to prevent any future Russian attack which could extend the conflict or trigger a new war, Macron said after his meeting with TrumpZelenskyy and the best European leaders.
“If you conclude a peace agreement without security guarantee, Russia will never respect its words, will never respect its own commitments,” said Macron.
He said he promised that Trump noted that one of the key points of his Meeting Friday with Putin was that he had accepted security guarantees for Ukraine.
Asked about the possibility of a ceasefire, Macron said: “I hope that”, noting that Russia has made strikes in Ukraine even if the delegation of world leaders was in the United States.
“It is impossible for a Ukrainian president and Ukrainian officials to talk about peace while their country is destroyed and their civilians are killed,” he said.
Putin maintained the pressure in the performance of talks with deadly attacks in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia overnight, apparently trying to push Zelenskyy to respond to what is considered radical requests for a territory occupied by Russia in Ukraine.
Macron said there should not be an exchange of land, as Trump suggested, especially because there were long periods during the Russian war that his soldiers were unable to take important gains to take control of Ukrainian land.
“I do not see any exchange in the Russian proposal, with the exception of an exchange compared to what they wanted at the beginning,” he said.
“Now when we talk about territory, it is for the Ukrainian president and for the Ukrainian people to discuss on this subject,” he said.
A team of heavy goods vehicles joined Macron at the White House, notably the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the secretary general of NATO, Mark Rutte, the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, stressing the importance of the discussions.
Macron was one of the most clear leaders in Europe on war. He declared in a speech in March that Russia had threatened the whole continent.
And Monday, he stressed again that the threat extends far beyond Ukraine.
“What is happening in Ukraine is extremely important for the Ukrainian people, of course, but for all the security of Europe, because we are talking about containing a nuclear power, which has decided not to respect international borders. And I think it is very important for your country, because it is a question of credibility,” he said. “The way we behave in Ukraine will be a test for our collective credibility in the rest of the world.”
