Aryna Sabalenka marked her comments on Coco Gauff after the final of the French Open “completely non -professional” and revealed that she had written the American to apologize.
Gauffles ahead of a three sets match in Paris to win its second Grand Chelem title And deny Sabalenka a first crown of Roland-Garros.
During her post-match press conference in Paris, Sabalenka had suggested that the result was more due to her own mistakes than to Gauff’s performance, describing her as the worst final she had played.
Sabalenka, triple major champion, struck 37 winners, but finished the final with 70 uncomposed mistakes – compared to Gauff 30.
The world n ° 1 took a more graceful tone on social networks thereafter and, speaking to Eurosport Germany Before its first Gazon Land Tournament in Berlin, Belarusian was contrite.
“It was just unprofessional on my part,” said Sabalenka. “I let my emotions take over on me.
“I absolutely regret what I said at the time. We all make mistakes. I am just a human being who always learns in life. I think we have every day when we lose control. The difference with me is that the world is watching.”
Sabalenka contacted GAUFF to apologize and to highlight her respect for her rival, with whom she also lost in the US Open final two years ago.
“I kept becoming so emotional,” added Sabalenka, 27. “So I learned a lot. Above all, one thing: it is I who always treat my opponents with great respect, whether I win or lose. Without this respect, I would not be where I am today. So it was a difficult but very precious lesson for me.”
She now turned to the victory of a first title at Wimbledon, which begins on June 30.
Sabalenka remains motivated by her defeat in the semi-finals two years ago, when she lost against the Tunisian star jabeur despite a set and a break. She withdrew from the tournament last year due to a shoulder injury.
“We all have the same goal: to win the tournament,” she said. “It is about knowing how ready you are ready to go out and compete, even when things are not going so well. This is the desire to go there and fight for what you want.”
