The explosion occurred on Friday evening in Taiz City which was a battlefield in the Yemen civil war.
At least five children in the southwest Yemen died after an explosive apparatus blew in a residential area where they played football, said rights and witnesses.
The circumstances surrounding the late incident Friday in the Al-Hashmah sub-statement of Taiz province remain clear.
However, on Saturday, Yemen Center for Human Rights and another group of rights called Eye of Humanity, as well as Alirah TV controlled by the Houthi, said that an artillery shell had been dismissed by militias supported by the Islah party, which is allied with the government internationally recognized in southern Yemen.
Two local residents who witnessed, Ahmed Al-Sharee and Khaled al-Areki, told the Associated Press news agency that the children played football when the explosion occurred.
According to witnesses, at least three people suffering from minor to moderate injuries were also made in hospital. Meanwhile, Mahmoud Al-Mansi, another witness, said that the explosive was directed in an area where forces allied to the Islah party were present.
A spokesman for the United Nations Children’s Agency, UNICEF, told the Associated Press that they were aware of the reports on the incident but could not check the facts for the moment.
The Yemen Center for Human Rights condemned the incident in a report which included graphic photos of the bodies torn by the children. Quoting sources of health care at the Al-Rafai hospital, where the victims arrived unanswered, the group said they died of shell injury.
Two of the children were 12 years old, while two others were 14 years old, according to the group. The age of the fifth child is unknown.
Taiz City, the capital of the province of Taiz, was a battlefield, opposing the Houthis to other armed groups supported by the Islah party to each other and other factions of the civil war of Yemen.
The city had been under the Houthi blockade since 2016, restricting freedom of movement and the flow of essential products to residents, but Houthis recently opened key roads.
The ruinous civil war of Yemen began in 2014 when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa and a large part of northern Yemen, forcing the government internationally recognized in exile.
A coalition led by Saudi Arabia and including the United Arab Emirates intervened in 2015 to try to restore the government in power.
Years of non -marketed peace talks have also failed to break the dead end. But the conflict has been widely frozen since the sides reached a cease-fire in 2022.
Water supported South Transition Council controls a large part of the South, which was fractured by the civil war. The Council pleads for the secession of the South and has its own forces, allied with the internationally recognized government, fighting the Houthis.
