Lando Norris continued to go beyond the teammate Oscar Piastri while McLaren maintained his domination during the final training at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Norris still lowered the reference time that he took the lead of the second training on Friday, with a 1: 04.324 putting him 0.118 away from Piastri.
After sitting on the first training yesterday while McLaren completed one of their obligatory recruit sessions, Norris has so far offered the perfect answer to cause it a collision with the leader of the world championship Piastri, the last time in Canada, who retired him from the race and saw his deficit in his teammate increase to 22 points.
The order of the first three was unchanged from the previous session with Max Verstappen third for Red Bull, but its two tenth deficit in Norris – as well as manipulation problems that led to a late rotation – suggested that the battle for the post could be limited to the McLarens.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took the fourth and fifth, respectively, for Ferrari, representing an improvement of a dark Friday for the Italian team as they seek to take advantage of the advantages of a fully improved car floor.
George Russell seems little likely to follow his post and his victory the last time in Canada, with the British nearly seven tenths from Norris in sixth, just in front of his teammate Mercedes Kimi Antonelli.
Although Norris’s speed was impressive, an error during his first attempted tower flying on his final game of soft tires recalled the challenge he will face in qualification.
The Briton has several times this season which seemed to be level or ahead of the Piatri to qualify, but then made mistakes which led him to qualify well under the potential of his car.
The generally regular Piastri has also appeared vulnerable, with a race on the gravel halfway from the session causing damage to the ground which briefly removed it from the track while repairs have been carried out with a glue pistol.
Although Verstappen does not seem to have the raw rhythm to correspond to the McLarens, the capacity of the world champion prevailing to do its best while most will ensure that the qualification will remain a fascinating spectacle.
Further on, Lance Stroll from Aston Martin and Gabriel Bortoleto de Sauber both continued their strong weekends to finish in the top 10 and can be qualified with realistic hopes to reach Q3.
