Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri insist that there is no change in McLaren’s commitment rules after “good” conversations about their collision in Canada.
Norris, who is 22 points behind Piastri in the pilot championship who arrives in the Austrian Grand Prix of this weekend, ran to the back of his teammate in Montreal and withdrew from the race.
The director of the Andrea Stella team said that he wanted “better judgment” of her drivers after the collision.
“There was a good understanding of everything, realizing my thoughts and understanding things for my side and explaining this to the team,” said Norris.
“I think that I said the immediate moment that I judged it badly and that I took the fault. Of course, it was not the most joyful conversations, but the conversations that had to be clear because it is not only about myself, this is how we play as a team. We all know what number one was and continues and that we will always be.
“Many things have come stronger than before Canada, which you might not expect. Thanks to unhappy circumstances, many things have been learned, many things have been transformed by being stronger.”
Piastri, whose eight consecutive podiums ended after finishing fourth in Montreal, says that he and Norris are “always free to run” and will ensure that they do not come up against again.
“I don’t think that will change anything. For me, I will certainly do nothing different,” he added.
“If Lando will do something different, it’s for him to answer, but I don’t expect nothing to change. We still have a long season in front of us. I think it will be a tight battle for the rest of the year.”
Norris immediately accepted the blame for the incident with Piastri and thinks it had taken into account “gave a good example” for McLaren.
“My team means everything for me, the people I grew up with, the people who gave me the opportunity in Formula 1, and I want to win with McLaren,” he continued.
“Because it was with my teammate was the most painful thing for me because it is the last thing I want.
“I felt bad, very bad for the team. A few difficult days, but it is something with which I improved, talking to Andrea and Zak (Brown), and the team, to pass as quickly as possible was very important.”
Even without the collision, Piastri and Norris were about not to finish on the podium in Canada – the first time that a driver of McLaren was not in the first three this season.
The British driver says that “some of our main competitors have caught up” in hot conditions, with warmer weather forecasts for the Austrian Grand Prix.
“Austria was one of our best tracks in the past, but it was also a very good for Red Bull and Max,” Norris, who took his Podium F1 Maiden in Spielberg, said.
“They have an advantage over us in high speed corners, which is a good amount from here, so we expect to be good, but perhaps fight a little in qualifications, compared to some of our competitors.”
Piastri and Norris have made various front suspensions in Montreal, the Australian driver choosing to use the old one.
Ferrari and Red Bull have confirmed that they would have improvements this weekend, but the McLaren manufacturers’ championship chiefs.
“We were a little caught by surprise that we were not as strong as we hoped in Canada, but I hope it’s only one-off,” said Piastri.
“As we arrived at the qualifications, I think we were in a better place and in the race, our rhythm was actually not bad, just we were a little further.
“I think we somehow understand what was wrong in Canada. So, we will try to spend a better weekend here, but I am convinced that we will be back on form.
He added: “We have new pieces, yes. I think a few songs in front of the car, and I hope it makes us more quickly. It is normally the plan.”
