Lando Norris resisted two sustained pressure periods of teammate Oscar Piastri to win a crucial victory over his title rival in the Austrian Grand Prix and obtain his F1 World Championship offer on the right track.
In a race where the defending champion Max Verstappen retired in the first round after being turned by Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes, the McLaren pilots dominated the battle for the victory around the Red Bull ring – with Norris finally prevailing the coming week of Piastri on 15 points at his British home British GP the coming week.
A fortnight after hitting his teammate back to Canada, Poleter Norris crowned a beautiful weekend of rebound in the styre hills by fighting the challenge of his teammate during the first pass as the McLarens were rolling away and keeping his cool to stay in advance while Piastri returned to him in the terms of fence.
But Verstappen is now a mammoth 61 points from the pace approaching the half of the season after its race on the home track of Red Bull only lasted three corners.
The driver of Red Bull was turned three after an error from Antonelli in the braking area during the fight with cars behind the Mercedes running on the side of the Dutchman.
Although never in the running for the victory after having died for second place by Piastri at the start, Charles Leclerc crowned an improved weekend for Ferrari by taking third place for his fourth podium of the year.
Leclerc finished nine seconds ahead of the teammate Lewis Hamilton, whose wait for a first podium in Scuderia goes to Silverstone.
The stifling temperatures of the track in Austria exposed the winners of Montreal Mercedes again while George Russell returned home 33 seconds behind Hamilton, fourth in a fifth solitary – and an entire minute behind the race winner.
Liam Lawson took a good sixth for racing bulls while Fernando Alonso d’Aston Martin has just retained Gabriel Bortoleto – who is part of his management stable – in a late fight for seventh. The Brazilian recruit Bortoleto, however, could still be satisfied with its first points in F1 after a good weekend.
Nico Hulkenberg made it a double celebration for Sauber in the 20th race on the ninth grid, while Esteban Ocon won a Ding-Dong battle for the last point in Haas.
And stressing their almost total dependence in Verstappen, the Red Bull home team managed to score any points after the world’s first misfortune in the middle of a hot afternoon for Yuki Tsunoda.
The Japanese driver, who had started the 18th, had contacts with Lance Stroll and Franco Colapinto – the latter incident earned him a penalty of 10s – and finished two laps in the 16th and last place.
