Diplomatic efforts to defuse the conflict between Iran and Israel have so far failed, producing more posture and platitudes than signs of progress.
During a tense session at the United Nations Security Council yesterday, Iranian and Israeli representatives exchanged insults and promised to continue to fight during an uncompromising meeting.
Meanwhile, European diplomats tried to relaunch diplomatic canals, with little to show. The Araghchi Abbas of Iran met with its counterparts – the Barrot of Jean -Noël de France, David Lammy of Great Britain and Johann Wadephul of Germany – in Geneva. Although the meeting has given hope that a return to the talks is possible, it has given no concrete indication that this is the case, reported the association Press.
President Donald Trump rejected the European initiative, saying that any diplomatic solution would require American involvement. At the same time, he said yesterday that the conflict would be “very difficult to arrest” when asked if he had supported a cease-fire during a potential negotiation phase.
While Trump opened a two-week window for negotiations with Iran, Araghchi told NBC News that his country was not sure that he could trust in the United States, and then accused the country of being involved in the “first day” attacks.
Araghchi also says that Iran will not return to the negotiation table while the Israeli bombardment continues, while the conflict enters its ninth consecutive day.
But the situation in the field and in the air remains volatile, with rhetorical hardening and mutual distrust appearing to deepen.
The United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned the risks of climbing. “We do not derive towards the crisis-we run towards it,” he said.
“We do not help in isolated incidents – we are on the right track of potential chaos. The expansion of this conflict could light a fire that no one can control. We must not let this happen. ”
