Owen Farrell was appointed to start and captain of the British and Irish lions in their last mid -week tour against a First Nations Pasifika XV on Tuesday.
Farrell, son of the Lions head coach, Andy, will start in Inside-Center having been a late call on the tour after an injury in the forearm at Elliot Daly who forced the latter to return home after the second match of the tour in Australia against Queensland Reds.
Tuesday’s team contains 10 late calls in total while the Lions are looking to protect their team before the second test on Saturday against the Wallabies at the MCG.
Scrum-Half ben White, Hooker Jamie George, Prop Finlay Bealham, Wing Darcy Graham and the Jamie Osborne Center start alongside Farrell, while Hooker Ewan Ashman, Rory Sutherland, Tweread Thomas Clarkson and Lock Gregor Brown Tian on the bench.
Seven of these 10 were initially brought into the team as the lions cover to George, Graham, Osborne, Ashman, Sutherland, Clarkson and Brown, but all are involved.
Elsewhere in the side, the lateral back Blair Kinghorn (knee) recovered from an injury to start alongside Duhan Van der Merwe and Graham on the back. Center Garry Ringrose returns to the bench after overcoming the concussion.
End Half at the end of Smith begins alongside White in half-dos, while the Loosehead Pierre Schoeman propeller forms a row with George and Bealham.
James Ryan and Scott Cummings start together in the second row, while a very strong row of Jac Morgan, Josh Van der Flier and Henry Pollock complete the starting team.
Back-Row Ben Earl, the half—–matt Alex Mitchell and the half-fly Marcus Smith double from the first test on Saturday on the bench.
“This match gives players another opportunity to get their hands on the selection for the last two tests,” said head coach Andy Farrell.
“The minds of the coaches are open with regard to the selection, they must be with as many players playing and pushing for places and we want this to continue for the two remaining tests.
“This group knows the level of performance we need against a First Nations team and Pasifika who is full of talents and power.”
