Friday, the WNBA 2025 season is around, about seven months after the New York Liberty won its first championship in the history of the franchise.
There was a constant flow of alignment and coach upheavals during the offseason, while seven teams changed coaches and several stars changed teams. And in addition to that, a 13th franchise was added to the League because the Golden State Valkyries will do their WNBA this season.
While the new year begins, five scenarios here are to keep an eye before a champion was crowned this fall.
Thanks largely to a stellar recruit campaign of Caitlin Clark, the fever has made the playoffs for the first time since 2016. And this winter, the Office Front has not lost time to try to build a more experienced team around Clark during its second season.
The team separated for the first time from head coach Christie Sides during the offseason, replacing it with the coach of the year of the WNBA in 2023, Stephanie White.
Then, a revision of the list began, with goalkeeper Sydney Colson and the goalkeeper / striker Dewanna Bonner, signature agreements with the Indiana in a free agency, while goalkeeper Sophie Cunningham was acquired via trade. Colson and Bonner are twice champions, and they should help relieve part of the pressure on Clark, which was the target of a physical defense during its first season.
If Clark makes another jump – the more Aliyah Boston continues his stars game in the front ground – the fever should be difficult.
The Las Vegas Aces won consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023, but were hit in the second round of the playoffs in 2024 by the possible Liberty champion. With the A’ja Wilson center, which comes from its best season as a pro (and its third MVP), the ACES made a big splash this winter and acquired a new package for Wilson – a merchant for twice champion and six stars, Jewell Loyd.
Las Vegas had to separate from the pillar of the Kelsey Plum franchise (which was sent to the Los Angeles Sparks) in the agreement, but Loyd should be able to form its own powerful partnership with Wilson.
Meanwhile, New York was not rested after winning its first ring. With a big three of Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones already trailer, the Liberty exchanged two first -round choices against goalkeeper Natasha Cloud, who led the league in assists in 2022.
Necklace comes out of a race in a historic playoff series in which she became the first player in the history of the WNBA to direct the whole field in points, rebounds, fly and blocks. Necklace also broke the Diana Taurasi record for most points in a single qualifying series.
Collar’s efforts ended with sorrow, however, when the lynx fell into a series of five closely disputed games for freedom. Collar was not would like to express his disappointment with regard to the officer in this series, by publishing an Instagram with Photos of missed calls After the last match.
While a large part of the league has undergone a change, Minnesota has kept its alignment largely intact in this season. Necklace was already playing at the MVP level, but now she will play with the additional motivation for the bitter finish of last season.
The Dallas Wings have taken the former Connecticut Huskies star, Paige Bueckers, with the first overall choice of April draft, and Bueckers will now be responsible for shooting the wings less than two months after driving the Huskeys to a national championship.
Since he moved to Dallas in 2016, the Wings have won only one eliminatory series and zero second round games.
Bueckers will not fly solo, however, because Dallas added solid players in Dijonai Carrington and Nalyssa Smith during the offseason, and All-Star Arike Ogunbowale undoubtedly takes place in his best year as a pro.
All the action of this season will take place under imminent changes for a league which continues to explode in popularity. While the Valkyries will lace this year, two other expansion teams will join the W in 2026, the Toronto Tempo and the Portland team still to be appointed.
The collective negotiation agreement between the players’ union and the league should also expire next year – as are many star players contracts. Expect that players are looking for a larger (and fairer) piece of the growing pie next year, and that stars are looking to take advantage of the future transformation.
