The Riviera Riviera de Cannes has become the last European destination famous for joining the growing worldwide against Suntourism by imposing what its municipal council calls “drastic regulations” on cruise ships.
The municipal councilors of Cannes voted on Friday to introduce new limits to cruise ships in the ports of the city. From January 1, only the shipments with less than 1,000 passengers will be authorized in the port, and a maximum of 6,000 passengers will be allowed to land daily. Larger ships will have to transfer the passengers to small boats to enter Cannes.
Two cruise ships were to dock in Cannes, world -renowned for their film festival on Sunday, each one much larger than the next limit of 1,000 passengers with a combined capacity of more than 7,000 people.
“Cannes has become an important destination for cruise ships, with real economic advantages. It is not a question of prohibiting cruising ships, but of regulating, organizing, defining directives for their navigation,” said Mayor David Lisnard in a statement.
Cruise operators called these damaging restrictions for destinations and passengers.
The neighboring city of Nice has announced limits to cruising ships earlier this year, just like other European cities, notably Venice, Barcelona and Amsterdam.
France – which attracted 100 million visitors last year, more than any other European country and more than the country’s population – is at the forefront of efforts to balance the economic benefits of tourism with environmental concerns while managing booming crowds.
Cannes and Nice are not the only French cities to take measures against Suntourism.
On Monday in Paris, the Louvre workers went on strike to protest against the “untenable” working conditions, the “chronic under-effective” and the “unmanageable crowds” caused by the surprise, that they estimated that the museum infrastructure and the current staff levels could no longer manage.
