Somi Lee has put on an eight-foot sneak putt on the first dam hole to win the victory alongside his South Korean compatriot Jin Hee IM in the Dow championship, refusing Lexi Thompson his first LPGA Tour title in six years.
Thompson’s game partner in the Official Team event on the LPGA calendar, Megan Khang, had the chance to extend the play-off, but she missed five feet at the Midland Country Club in Michigan.
Thompson made an eight-foot sneaky putt on the 18th hole in-three, Khang still facing a six-foot birdie attempt, while the American duo closed with a 10-year-old in the Fourball format. They were the first to display at 20 sous 260.
Lee made a 10 -foot putt to equalize for the head on the 17th, before IM and Lee lacked the chances of Birdie on the 18th in rules for victory.
The play-off went to Foursomes and Thompson struck the TEE shot on the 18th at only five feet to the right of the cup. I approached the spit but eight feet long, setting up Lee for the winning putt.
“Bummer miss the last of the playoffs to force another hole, but very happy with the way we played,” said Khang.
Thompson has not won since the LPGA Classic shoprite in 2019 and decided last summer to no longer play a complete calendar, with the Dow its eighth tournament championship this year.
IM and LEE, on the other hand, are in their second year on the LPGA Tour and won their first title in America – although the two were prolific winners on LPGA Korea with IM winning six times on the KLPGA, while Lee has five KLPGA titles.
“I can’t believe it,” said Lee after winning his winning putt.
Lindy Duncan and Miranda Wang had 59 in better swept format and tied to the third, two play-off shots. They were joined by Manon de Roey and Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, who joined forces for a 64.
Albane Valenzuela and Sarah Schmelzel, who had the advance of 54 holes, closed with a 66 and failed to be sliced on the last seven holes. They finished fifth, three strokes behind.
Thompson did not indicate when she would play again. The next LPGA calendar is the Evian championship in France, a Major Thompson jumped each year dating from 2019.
The main women’s season continues next month at the Amundi Evian championship, live from July 10 to 13 on Sky Sports Golf, where Ayaka Furue is reigning champion.
