The peace agreement in the United States and Qatar must be followed by the disengagement and the return of displaced families, said the DRC.
The leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda signed a peace agreement in Washington DC to end the years of fighting between neighboring countries.
Meeting at the White House in the United States on Friday, foreign ministers in the two African countries signed a negotiated agreement by the United States and Qatar.
The agreement increases the hopes of the end of the fighting which increased with the advance of the M23 rebels this year. The conflict has killed thousands and moved hundreds of thousands of others since January.
“We believe that a turning point was reached with the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Rwandan Minister for Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe at the signing.
The peace agreement must be followed by the disengagement, the justice and the return of the displaced families, added the Congolese Minister for Foreign Affairs, Therese Kayikwamba Wagner.
“It is an important moment after 30 years of war,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who welcomed the two foreign ministers in the Washington State Department for the signing.
The agreement will also help the US government and US companies to access critical minerals necessary for a large part of global technology at a time when the United States and China are actively in competition for influence in Africa.
Analysts consider the agreement as a major turning point, but do not believe that it will quickly end the fighting that has killed millions of people since the 1990s.
