The tourist balloon carrying 21 people ignited in the early hours of Saturday, crashing into the city of Praia Grande on the Atlantic coast, according to the military brigade of Santa Catarina.

Images shared by the Local G1 media have shown smoke caps from the ball while falling tens of meters towards the ground.

The survivors were transported to neighboring hospitals, firefighters said.

“We are in mourning. A tragedy has happened. We will see how it happens, what happened, why it happened. But the important thing now is that the structure of the state does what it can,” said Jorginho Mello, governor of Santa Catarina, in a video on X.

Mello said he had asked the authorities to go to the municipality “to do as much as possible to rescue, to help, to go to the hospital, to comfort families”.

Praia Grande is a common destination for the hot air balloon, a popular activity in certain parts of southern Brazil during the June festivities that celebrate Catholic saints such as St John, whose day of the party is on June 24.

Last Sunday, a ball went down in the state of Sao Paulo, killing a 27 -year -old woman and injuring 11 other people, G1 reported.
