“So, I was really inspired by the way they call their real breeds. And so we have done a lot of sessions with them. I really think they are the unknown heroes of this film.

“If you look at it, you see how they somehow carry an audience that knows nothing through this story but do it in a way that seems very authentic and it is really their own voice.”

“Cheating” only concerns “F1 eyes”

When a F1 media section was shown a screening of the film at the Canadian Grand Prix earlier in June, a concern that was raised the next day during a press conference with the film manufacturers was that elements of the plot had risked glorifying the rules of sport.

Kosinski explained that all racing plots were based on things that had happened in the history of F1, but admitted to having pushed the limits.

He said, “It was something we talked about a lot with Lewis, and the line, right? We never wanted Sonny cheating. We wanted to find how far you can push him so that you can go directly to the edge.

“The difficult thing was, how are we going to the line without crossing it? And it was a great challenge in these race scenes.”

The president of F1, Stefano Domenicali, rejected concern as something only those who look with “very F1 eyes” would notice, insisting that people less exposed to sport would simply appreciate the drama.

Kosinski added: “The Grand Prix and Le Mans for me are sort of touch stones. These films are now almost 60 years old, but you can always watch them while amazing cinematography and the feeling of being there, because you were really.”
