A man died of burns and thousands of people were forced to flee while forest fires sweep parts of Spain, fed by strong winds during a hot heat wave across Europe.
The victim suffered serious burns while winds up to 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) whipped the flames by very cantos, a rich suburb north of the capital, Madrid, officials announced on Tuesday.
The man died later in the hospital, becoming the first death of dozens of forest fires to hit the country since the start of the heat wave last week.
The head of the regional government of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, said in a message on X that she had “deeply regretted” the death of man.
Hundreds of residents of very cantos have been evacuated from their houses.

A civil guard police officer was injured when he was struck by a car while helping the evacuation, he added.
In the northwest region of Castile and Leon, more than 30 flames were reported on Monday, including a threatening las las, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its former Roman gold mines.
Thermal alerts have also been issued in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Balkans, with temperatures that should hover over 40c. A child died on Monday from a heat stroke in Italy.
Forest fires are also raging in Turkiye.
The firefighters fought several forest fires across the country on Tuesday with a large fire in the northwest province of Canakkale which burns for a second day after hundreds of residents were evacuated as a precaution.
Canakkale Airport and the Strait of Dardanelles, which links the Aegean Sea to the Marmara Sea, were temporarily closed due to forest fires on Monday.
