Google Deepmind’s Aeneas model can restore fragmented Latin text


At best, AI is a tool, not a final result. This allows people to do their work better, rather than sending them or their colleagues to the bread line. In an example of “the right genre”, Google Deepmind has created An AI model that restores and contextualizes old inscriptions. The ancient Romans have left a plethora of inscriptions. But these texts are often fragmented, altered or degraded. The reconstruction of missing parts is an exhausting task that requires contextual clues. An algorithm that can pore a set of data from these clues can be useful.

Énée accelerates one of the most difficult tasks of historians: identifying the “parallels”. In this context, this means finding similar texts organized by the label, syntax or the region. Deepmind says that the model reasons in thousands of Latin inscriptions. He can recover the parallels in a few seconds before giving the stick to historians.

Deepmind says that he transforms each text into a kind of historical fingerprint. “Aeneas identifies deep connections that can help historians locate inscriptions in their wider historical context,” wrote the Google subsidiary.

One of the most impressive tips of Aeneas is to restore textual gaps of unknown length. (Consider it as filling a crossword puzzle where you do not know how many letters are in each index.) The tool is also multimodal, which means that it can analyze both a textual and visual entry. Deepmind says that it is the first model that can use this method with several parts to determine where a text comes from.

Deepmind says that Aeneas is designed to be a collaborative ally in the existing workflows of historians. It is preferable to offer “interpretable suggestions” which serve as a starting point for researchers. “The parallels of Aneas have completely changed my perception of the inscription,” wrote an anonymous historian who tested the model. “He noticed details that made all the difference for the restoration and chronological attribution of the text.”

In addition to the release of Eneas for the Latin text, Deepmind has also upgraded Ithaca. (This is his model for the ancient Greek text.) Ithaca is now propelled by Aeneas, receiving her contextual and restorative superpowers.
