Google announced on Monday a partnership with Commonwealth Fusion Systems, or CFS, a private company was transferred from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which marks the giant of technology′s First commercial commitment to the merger.
The company has unveiled plans to buy 200 megawatts of specific fusion power from what CFS describes as the world Fusion plant on the scale of the first networkKnown as the arc, based in the county of Chesterfield, in Virginia.
The arc should be online and generate 400 megawatts of clean and zero carbon power in the early 2030s, which is sufficient energy to supply large industrial sites or around 150,000 houses, according to CFS. The agreement also gives Google the possibility of buying electricity from additional arc factories.
Google, which has invested in CFS since 2021, said it also increased its participation in the Devens company, in the Massachusetts.
Google and CFS did not disclose the financial conditions.
“We are delighted to do this gamble in the longer term on technology with a potential transformer to meet global energy demand, and to support CF in their efforts to reach their scientific and engineering stages necessary to get there,” said Michael Terrell, advanced energy manager at Google, in a press release.
Fusion is a process that takes light atomic nuclei and heats them to more than 100 million degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, fuel becomes a plasma, which ends up merging the nuclei and released significant amounts of energy. The energy is then captured to create carbon -free electricity.
CFS is one of the many companies that run to reach the commercial fusion energy and Google has invested in others. Earlier this month, Google Announced continuous funding For TAE Technologies, a California fusion energy company.
