Google’s carbon emissions have further brought up

Google carbon emissions have again jumped while the company continues to advance AI. Society 2025 sustainability report Emphasizes that its “ambition -based emissions” increased by 11% last year to 11.5 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide pollution, marking an increase of 51% compared to 2019.

This takes Google away from its objective of reducing pollution by the planet by half by 2030 compared to a reference base in 2019. But what he calls emissions “based on ambition” excludes certain categories of pollution of the supply chain which it considers by its control or “peripheral” at the core of alphabet, the mother company of Google. This includes certain purchased products and services and food programs.

A table buried in the annex to the report shows that its total emissions have in fact reached 15,185,200 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. It’s about equivalent to emissions of nearly 40 gas power plants over a year. The Google report also highlights a 12% reduction in carbon emissions from data centers, even if its energy consumption continues to increase thanks to AI. Despite the decrease, carbon emissions from data centers are still much higher compared to 2019.

In its report, Google cites several factors outside its “direct control” which make it more difficult to achieve its climatic objectives. This includes “the rapid evolution of AI” which could make “future energy needs and emission trajectories more difficult to predict”. He also calls changes to climatic and energy -related policies, “slower than necessary” deployment of carbon -free energy technologies and a lack of carbon -free energy solutions on certain markets. “These external factors could affect the cost, feasibility and chronology of our progress – and navigate them require flexibility,” writes Google.
