Gopro’s anamorphic objective facilitates the obtaining of elegant cinematographic action photos

Gopro’s anamorphic objective mod is finally available for purchase, completing all the objectives that the company has tackled when it announced its Hero 13 action cam. At the time, the most significant change in the latest edition of its best -selling camera was the possibility of setting a selection of ND objectives and filters. Of all, I was the most intrigued by the anamorphic objective model ($ 130), launched as a lens for “professional artistic cinema”.

Like the rest of the Gopro HB series objectives, it is easy to remove the basic lens from the hero 13 and replace it with the much thicker anamorphic lens. (It also comes with front and rear caps to store it safely when it is not attached to the camera.)

Given its size, it should be noted that this could mean that some of your cases and third -party accessories may not be wrapped around the hero’s body 13 once the objective is attached. However, this did not particularly affect the distribution of weight when I mounted it on my tripod, but I always wary the way the front glass element is exposed.

Once locked, the hero 13 goes to the appropriate camera mode, maximizing the parameters and calibrating precisely towards the lens. However, you still have latitude in the video settings: you can capture the video in 5.3K up to 60 IPS and 4K up to 120 images per second for film scenes in slow motion. If you want to go to town, you can also record GP-LOG in 10 bit and you buy an accessory of $ 130, you probably want to get everything that hero is capable of.

Fortunately, it’s Gopro, and the company was very simple for even beginners to capture and share usable images with its most unusual objective. The hero 13 Black deposits the images while being captured, which facilitates publishing. (The decline consists in correcting the oval distortion of your video sequences caused by anamorphic lenses.)

Not only does this rationalize the modification of the post -production – it is ready to share after having finished recording – this also means that the video overview of the hero 13 shows the deployed, which facilitates the framing. The objective is also compatible with Gopro’s electronic image stabilization technology, Hypersmooth, although the company recommends combining it with a gimbal for even smoother images. If you want a total control, you can also pull in standard lens mode and manually relax post-production images.

And as it is a real anamorphic objective (and not only a very, very large objective), it can also capture outbursts of objectives, with this anamorphic sequence which has become the trade mark of JJ Abrams. This helps to make my images look like a film video camera, not an action cam.

The drawbacks are minor. As I mentioned earlier, I worry about damaging the goal, although it has a hydrophobic and anti-reflective coating. In addition, I found the most attractive opportunities to show these horizontal lenses are generally images of the night or sunset. Unfortunately, the Hero 13 is not the most capable low light camera, which means that my efforts to capture cool urban landscape traffic have produced somewhat too dark results. For the best sequences, in general, I Maxidais ISO at 800 and turned in 10 -bit mode to try to recover as many details as possible.
