What is the height Your risk of dementia? It could depend on where you live, according to a new study of American veterans.
A team from UC San Francisco said on Monday that it had identified the regions where chronic brain disorder occurs most often. Using the region of the Atlantic midfielder as a reference for comparison, where dementia incidence rates were the lowest, they found that dementia was 25% higher in the Southeast. This included Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. While the northwest and Rocky Mountain regions were both 23% higher.
Other regions included in the study – one of the largest and most complete of the genre – were the South and the South West, which were 18 and 13% higher respectively. California has been included in the Southwest.
Northeast incidence rates were even higher than mid-Atlantic, but just 7%.
“The study underlines the need to understand the regional differences in dementia and the importance of prevention and intervention efforts specific to the region,” said the Center for Population’s Brain Health Director statement.
Yaffe was the main author of the study, which was published in the journal Jama neurology.
The study included health files of more than 1.2 million veterans, noting that veterans have a higher prevalence of risk factors such as traumatic brain lesions, depressionand post-traumatic stress.
The researchers found that the differences remained when they represented certain factors, including age, race and cardiovascular disease.
They noted that access to medical care can be more difficult in rural areas than in urban areas. Previous research has revealed Higher rate of dementia in rural communities.

The start of dementia is known to be linked to depression, but different types have their own causes. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, impacting Some 6.7 million Americans. The cases are estimated to double by 2060. There is currently no remedy.
The next step for these researchers is to study the factors stimulating these differences. They said they hoped that identifying areas with the highest incidence rates, resources can be better allocated and targeted interventions designed to mitigate the impact of dementia on vulnerable populations.
“The quality of education, early conditions and environmental exhibitions can be part of these factors,” said the first author, Dre Christina Dintica.
