Erick should intensify quickly and reach the force majeure of hurricanes as the coast of Mexico approaches.
Hurricane Erick is expected to bring heavy rains, strong winds, a wave of storms and possible mud shifts in the south of coastal Mexico, said National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States, causing potential “deadly flood and mudslides”.
Initially a tropical storm, Erick became a category 1 hurricane Wednesday, packaging sustained maximum winds of 120 km / h (75 MPH), said the meteorological center. It was located 255 km (158 miles) from the city of Puerto Angel in the state of southern Oaxaca, in southern Oaxaca.
“Rapid strengthening is expected today, and Erick can reach a significant force of hurricanes when she approaches the southern Mexico coast,” said NHC.
The forecasts predicted precipitation in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, as well as less heavy rains for the states of Chiapas, Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco.
Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum urged the population to be alert.
The planned path of the storm would take its center near the famous Acapulco complex, which was devastated in October 2023 by Hurricane Otis, a category 5 hurricane which killed at least 52 people, and left a trace of destruction, after the storm has seriously damaged almost all the hotels of the station.
John, a category 3 storm that struck in September from last year, left around 15 deaths.
