On Tuesday, security officials said that dozens of activists belonging to the Pakistani party Tehreek-e-insaf (PTI) of Khan were arrested, most of the detentions made on Monday evening and early Tuesday in the eastern city of Lahore, where the PTI called a huge demonstration later during the day.
At least 200 activists had been arrested in Lahore, said PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari, adding that demonstrations would still take place. Lahore is the capital of Punjab, the country’s most political political region and shelters half of its population.
Khan, a popular cricket star, was elected Prime Minister in 2018. But once in office, he fell with the powerful soldiers of Pakistan and was overthrown in 2022 by a vote in Parliament. Social media videos have also shown at least two other people detained in Lahore.
The Multan chapter of the PTI allegedly alleged that his rally of Lahore had been “attacked by the police,” the Pakistani newspaper reported on Tuesday.
“Redblements are organized today on the orders of the founder of the PTI,” said PTI president Gohar Ali Khan, in a statement, adding that they would continue until the release of Khan.
The rallies were organized despite the order of the government prohibiting “illegal” rallies and large assemblies, Pakistan’s Geo TV reported.

In a statement on Monday, police said that security had been strengthened in the country’s major cities.
At a press conference on Monday, Khan’s party was accused of having always created “chaos” by Uzma Bukhari, spokesperson for the provincial government.
“No political party can be prohibited from policy in Pakistan, but a terrorist organization disguised as a political party is not authorized to disrupt the peace of Pakistan,” said Bukhari.
The head of the PTI and former president of the National Assembly, Asad Qaiser, said that the party had committed to demonstrate peacefully and did not look for confrontation, reported Geo TV.
Khan says that the charges chosen against him – ranging from terrorism to the disclosure of official secrets – are politically motivated. He was sentenced in January in a case of corruptionWhile being acquitted other accusations or receiving suspended sentences.
