Inter Miami and Porto both play their second match FIFA Club World Cup In Florida Thursday, in what is indeed an essential match for the pair.
The two took a point of their opening match in group A, but a defeat in the second round of matches would result in pressure on the last match of the losing team in the group.
Al Jazeera Sport takes a look at a match that could be a huge step forward for Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi, or twice winners of the Champions League, Porto.
Inter Miami, one of the representatives of the host nation, opened the tournament with A 0-0 draw at their home stadium against Al Ahly on Saturday.
The Egyptian giants, the most successful club in world football, dominated the first half, but kept the second while Messi and Co found their place at the Hard Rock stadium.
Miami had the goalkeeper Oscar Ustari to thank for saving a penalty from Al Ahly Trezaguet attacker just before half-time.
Porto was pushed all the way by the Brazilian club Palmeiras when they also returned a 0-0 draw in the match played at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford – the place of the New Jersey which will welcome both the club World Cup and FIFA 2026 World Cup finals.
Palmeiras had 17 shots with five on the target, compared to 11, the goalkeeper of which was only tested five times.
Miami’s qualification was not without controversy. The Floridian Club has recorded Most points in the regular season of Major League Soccer (MLS)Giving them a place at the club World Cup instead of the Galaxy, which won the MLS Cup, which is considered the best price in MLS.
FIFA announced the addition of Miami to the club World Cup in October after obtaining the MLS record with a 6-2 victory against the New England Revolution to reach 74 points-a better than the previous record set by New England in 2021.
Porto qualified for the Club World Cup via the UEFA ranking path after its strong performance of the Champions League between 2021 and 2024.
The 30 times champions of the Portuguese League won the European Cup in 1987, as he was then appointed, and the Champions League in 2004.
The Benfica -based club finished 11 points on the champions sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese national league of this season.
“I watched the match between Miami and Al Ahly. I saw that they are two very tough opponents with great intensity,” said Porto Argentinian defender Alan Varela.
Commenting on his compatriot Countryman, Messi, the 23 -year -old added: “Inter has the best player in the world, so we will try to play and fight to the end, just as we did (against Palmeiras) and just as the club demands.
“The group is a big open, there is a long way to go. There are still two games, so we will try to obtain victory in each.”
The former English international Beckham is a co -owner of Miami. The former midfielder of Manchester United and Real Madrid had a clause in his football contract in Major League, during his fate as a player with the Galaxy, who offered him the possibility of buying a future MLS franchise. Beckham took the opportunity to buy a 25 million dollars participation in the franchise, who would become Inter Miamiin 2014.
The Miami -based franchise finally made its debut in 2020 and is also a co -owner by American Business Magnates, Jorge and Jose Mas, although Beckham is really the figure of the club.
This is the first meeting between the MLS franchise and the Portuguese giants.
Inter Miami has no news to report before the match against Porto, and should appoint the same starting program as in the first match.
Porto’s goalkeeper, Claudio Ramos, will start again between the sticks after his key performances which frustrated Palmeiras in their opening match.
Ramos is currently exceeding the injured captain of Porto, Diogo Costa, because the Portuguese team should also appoint an unchanged side.
