Jack Draper says that his triumph of the Indian Wells filled him with the conviction that he can “beat anyone” as he targets a double air conditioning victory in the Miami Open.
The British No. 1 climbed to a seventh career summit in the world ranking after beating Holger Rune in straight sets to win his first ATP 1000 Masters title in the BNP Paribas Open final.
The greatest victory of Draper’s career to date has left him overflowing with confidence and earned him a bye throughout the first round at the Miami Open, where he only chained the eighth man – and the first British – to finish the `Double Sunshine ”.
“There are a lot of incredible players in this draw,” said Draper Sky Sports. “Winning (at Indian Wells) makes me believe, I feel like I could beat anyone.
“At the same time, there are a lot of games ahead of me, starting with the first against a really difficult player. I believe in me, but there is a long way to go.
“Last week gave me a lot of confidence, it was great to celebrate with my family and my team, and to feel the pride that I feel.
“Likewise, I feel that I have been working around this moment for a long time and I think I can do it, so I take it in my stride. I pass here and I can’t wait to start again and start again hard here.
“I feel in good health; physically good, mentally strong and emotionally prepared to continue and put the work to be better.”
Draper would join the greats of Tennis Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras to complete the double Sunshine, if he was to secure his second title ATP 1000 Masters in the space of fifteen.
By reflecting on his exploits to Indian Wells, the 23 -year -old highlighted three pivotal moments that finally laid the foundations so that he arrives in the final with confidence.
“The first match against (Joao) Fonseca, someone who, I think, will be a better high -level player in the years to come,” said Draper.
“To see the fans and what he brought, the atmosphere of the first day, made me feel that I was in tournament mode. There were a lot of fans there and it was a really special match to pass.
“The match against Taylor (Fritz) was the place where it all started to click for me. I was looking for this for a while, especially in the back of these injuries at the start of the year, which really helped my confidence.
“Then, on the line in the match of Carlos (Alcaraz) on such a big scene against someone who won it twice in a row, it was really big for me.”
When asked if there was a match he approached with confidence, Draper added: “Probably the final. I played very good tennis all week.
“The day before, I had an oscillation in the second set against Carlos, so to overcome the line against this kind of player on this kind of stage is really important for me at this stage of my career. I entered the next knowing that I could feel it, but it was good and that I could do it.”
