The former midfielder of England Jordan Nobbs thinks that England still has a “great chance” to win Euro 2025 despite a series of pre-turn-turn problems affecting their preparations.
Three major withdrawals from the Sarina Wiegman team rocked the days of the England coach before appointing his final team, Fran Kirby and Mary Earps withdrawing from international football and Chelsea Millie Bright captain coming back from the tournament.
This came in the same week that England was rightly beaten 2-1 by Spain to miss a place in the final of the League of Nations, and they lost two of their last three games in front of Jamaica during their last pre-European friendly on Sunday.
But speaking to Sky Sports NewsNobbs said that the winning mentality of England remained after reaching consecutive finals during the last two major tournaments – and entered the European Championships as a reigning champions.
“We saw them win the euros, the second in the World Cup, so I think that with the winning mentality, the players they have, I think they have a great chance,” she said. “It will obviously be a difficult group, but they have the players and the staff behind them to go to the final, so I hope we can see them.
“Regarding football tournaments, you just have to learn experiences that have led it. There have been many times when it is not always the simplest ride, but it is obviously what is happening in the most important tournament.
“They have lost some experienced players, but they still have winners of the Champions League, Euro winners within this team, so I’m sure they will all have the same mentality and mind in this tournament as well.
“These are very big characters and they will be difficult to fill, but Sarina knows what she is doing and, hopefully, Lucy Bronze, Leah Williamson, they all have leadership qualities within this team which will always be an important role in conducting the lionesses to the final.”
Nobbs was part of the England team which finished second behind Spain during the World Cup two years ago, and saw the impact of the management of Wiegman in Australia and New Zealand during this tournament.
The 32 -year -old man believes that the Dutch players’ management style will relieve a large part of the camp pressure, caused by this successful Euro 2022 tournament on the ground at home.
She said: “She is probably one of the most honest managers I have ever worked with. I think she wants to know where you are. She wants to know what role you will have in the team.
“I think it gives you the mentality to have an understanding and work as hard as possible for the team, whether you play or on the bench.
“I think that sometimes in a major tournament, it somehow adjusts pressure and nerves. I think it shows what she does as a manager.
“She was one of the most prosperous lioness managers who, so I’m sure she will go with a similar mentality and ensure that girls know all their roles and responsibilities within the team.”
