Justin Rose says he is motivated by Phil Mickelson to continue winning in the late 1940s and aims for a “gold summer” after winning the Fedex St Jude championship.
Rose, 45 Batting US Open Champion JJ SPAUN in playoffs.
The Englishman, whose last triumph came in February 2023, is now second on the list of six players in the European team qualifications for the Ryder Cup in September, live Sky SportsIt is therefore planned to make a seventh appearance in the famous biannual golf event.
“There is a fairly short list of guys who are competitive in this age group of 45 to 50,” said Rose.
“Obviously, Phil Mickelson jostled the trend. He won a major at 51. I have the impression that it is a good motivation.
“I always have the impression that this summer has been gilded this career in my career this summer. That’s why I pushed. Moments like getting closer to Too and then of obviously approaching Augusta, these are signals that it is possible.
“This is another really, really, really important signal that I am on the right track with my game, and maybe even that I am a little improve for the moment.”
The only major victory in Rose occurred at the US Open 2013, but he has since finished second in the Masters three times, including in April of this year in a dramatic defeat of the playoffs against Rory McILroy, and is only the second golfer to lose two Masters qualifiers in his career – the other being Ben Hogan in 1942 and 1954. He was also two times in 2018 and 2024.
If Rose wins a major after 2026, he would become the oldest European to win one of the four biggest events in golf, and it is “excited” to see how the last stages of his career develop.

“Will I never be the best player I was when I was maybe 2018 No. 1 in the world? I don’t know, but I don’t have to be, I don’t think, as long as I can find it at key moments,” he said.
“I was able to do it, I showed good signs, I think. But winning is a winner. I think that proving this to yourself, even if I got closer and I felt good, on the line is always difficult, and obviously I have won, like twice in six years now, but it was good.
“I felt like I had to hit the shots, I had to intensify again and again in the playoffs. I felt ready for that. I felt calm. I felt collected. I think that is when you learn most about yourself.”
David Howell of Sky Sports Golf:
“Rose was special when he came on tour at 17, finishing fourth at the open. He had it from the word Go.
“He continued to advance the best part of three decades, which is remarkable, and he has an incredible belief in his own capacities, when it really matters.
“He realizes that he was not going to be as coherent in this period of his career compared to 10 years ago, but in great moments, he has it as well as anyone else.
“Justin wants another adult. He wants the masters. It was the tournament that broke his heart.
“It will give him another boost to make him think” perhaps to have a few good years on this subject “and to go” why I cannot win in my 1950s “. Phil Mickelson won in the fifties.
“We will see superb things from Justin in the coming years and he will have a large Ryder Cup next month.”
