Jamie Carragher struck the “incredible” defense of Liverpool and “absolutely shocking” in their 4-2 victory against Bournemouth – saying that they would not keep their title of Premier League if they continue with these standards.
Liverpool won an emotional evening in Anfield thanks to late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah – but they had a real fear of the Cherries while Antoine Semenyo, the shot of Quickfire by Antoine Semenyo, canceled the goals on each side of half -time by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo.
The two goals of Semenyo saw Liverpool took the transition – with the second goal of Bournemouth by seeing the young attacker run almost the length of the ground before finding the lower corner.
Carragher also struck Ibrahima Konate, who, he said, was responsible for the poor defense of the two goals.
“It’s amazing,” said Carragher football on Friday evening after the match. “It’s fantastic of Semenyo – but Liverpool had this problem.
“How many players were ahead of the ball – maybe eight players – when they won 2-1? It can’t happen. It’s absolutely shocking at this level.
“So that Semenyo runs so far and getting pulled on is incredible – but where is Konate? He had a really, really poor evening at the central defender.”
Carragher added that Liverpool’s defense was mediocre during their pre-season campaign. There were similar goals conceded during the 4-2 defeat against AC Milan, when they also conceded twice against Athletic Club and Crystal Palace in the community shield.
Sky Sports Pundit also criticized Liverpool’s defense at Wembley – and suggested on Friday evening that it is too easy for teams to cut the side of Arne Slot.
“This is not true. This is not the case,” said Carragher. “It is only the game at the top of the community shield – but I looked enough football in my life. This idea that everyone bombards forward is not for me. I don’t like it.
“At no time last week, in the community shield, I never felt that Liverpool controlled the game. You can draw 2-2 with palace, it can happen. But it is how easy Crystal Palace, how easy it was this evening.
“In the first half, Bournemouth should have been at least 2-0 at a given time.”
Liverpool’s bad defendant comes next to the club’s pursuit of a central defender in the last weeks of the window.
The Reds obtained the signing of 26 million pounds sterling from the central defender of Parma Giovanni Leoni on Friday – but they were also strongly linked to a movement for Captain of Crystal Palace Marc Guehi.
There is also the situation of Konate – the French international entering the last year of his Liverpool contract – in the midst of rumors connecting the defender to Real Madrid next season.
But Carragher believes that any new defender would not solve the global problem of Liverpool to be too easy to attack.
“There is certainly a problem that Arne Slot must solve,” said Carragher.
“People say they need a central defender – a central defender does not solve this. He just takes the place of Konate.
“It is a question of composing the team with two rear attackers and a No. 10 which is more interested in getting on the ball than defending the (Dominik) Szoboszlai last season.
“If Liverpool continues like that, I don’t think they will win the League.”
Slot responded to Carragher’s comment, saying that Liverpool is more vulnerable on the counterattack due to the absence of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister also lacking sharpness in the midfield.
“I’m talking about a player who was not available last week and not this week. It’s Ryan Gravenberch,” said Slot. “Last season, he was very, very important in these moments.
“So, with Alexis Mac Allister being only two or three weeks in pre-season, we have lost a little of this control in our midfielder. But Ryan will be back next week and Macca will be more fit. And we will find a balance in risk taking because against Palace, we have lost two or three simple balls to counter-attack.”
And responding to Carragher’s comments on the fact that Liverpool throws too much bodies, Slot said that he did not intend to change his philosophy.
“It is also who we were and who we are – and that is why we see such a beautiful game if you watch Liverpool,” said the boss of the Reds. “We are not going to a low block to defend.”
Carragher replied: “It worries me a little, you say that it is the team we are, with bodies in the future.”
“You are allowed to say,” said Liverpool head coach. “But you must then support a team that plays 11 players in their own box. I prefer to see (which Liverpool did against Bournemouth).
“But I prefer even more so as not to see us counterattacked – on which I agree. But I like that our players like to play football – last season, we were a joy to watch. Paris Saint -Germain is doing things similar to that.”
